Smoke Free Home

This 'n' That

9 Mar

So when you read this in an ad when someone is selling something I wonder if they ever had a day like I did.

Last night when I went to bed, I barely got into bed and I bolted out like a shot.  I could smell something burning, I thought Eric was cooking something, but nope.  I woke up Jeff and he could smell it to.  It smelled like when you turn the heater on after summer, and it burns the dust off, but way worse. So we smelled lamps and felt cords to see if they were hot and we couldn't figure it out, it was worse in our bedroom.  I went outside to see if I could see anything. I turned off the thermostat thing on the wall and threw some extra covers on the bed.  After a while Jeff was like we gotta get some sleep. I kissed him and said I loved him just in case something happened in the middle of the night. So he went to sleep with the horrible smell still in the air and I laid there and it took me a while to fall asleep.

By morning the smell was gone. I was up about half an hour and the smell came back. Eric was getting ready for work and I was running around trying to pick stuff up cause the ladies were coming to clean. So I thought if I put the fan on in our bedroom that would help.  Well when I put the fan on, there was smoke coming out of the vent in the ceiling. That had me freaking.  I called Jeff at work and told him and he said to call our neighbor Bill, but when I called Bill he was headed out, and he said call 911. So I called 911 and they had Rural Metro come out.  We pay them an annual fee for fire and stuff so I guess we should use it. They said to get out of the house and they would be out shortly.

The ladies showed up and we stood outside, Toby on his leash so I didn't have to hold him. Of course with our wacky address I saw the fire truck zip right by our street, and then they called for directions. Anyone that has been to my house knows our address is wrong. Note to self: call the county and have a new address issued.

So the firemen came and checked everything out, went in the attic and everything. They said it was probably just the dust burning off the heat strips, but I was telling them I had turned the heater off last night so how was that happening? They said the smoke alarms did not go off so it was ok.  They checked it all out and then they left.

So I opened up the windows to air the stink out.  As I sat at my laptop I was thinking gosh the smell was getting worse, I turned around and the ceiling of my stamp room had smoke swirling around it, so now the smoke was coming out the vent in my studio.  I went into our bedroom and it was half filled with smoke and this time the smoke alarms went off, so now I was freaking.  I called Jeff at work and told him to get home cause something was wrong, plus the heater that I had turned off was somehow still running and I could feel the heat coming out of the vents, I still have no clue how that was but figure it might have been doing that all night.  I was not calling 911 again cause they had already been out here. Jeff said to turn off the main power to the a/c and the heat strip thingie so I did.  Then I waited, and waited for him to come home.

When he got home he went into the attic to check it all out, and there was nothing on fire or smoldering but he could totally smell it. So our neighbor's son Joey works for an a/c company and Jeff called him so he came out on his way home, and I guess the compasitor died, which made the fan not work, which with the heater on, it fried all the wiring in the unit.  So then I was all worried, should we have been smelling these fumes?  I am still a little not sure about that.  Even my sweet friend Ellie said we could stay at her house.  It still stinks a bit tonight, (it's probably in the carpets and stuff) but I have been febreezing everything.

Joey will come back Saturday and get it fixed, I am hoping it don't cost an arm and a leg. But thankful that is all it did.  I was actually leaving to take Toby to the vet ten minutes before I saw the smoke, I called and changed his appointment.  I don't want to imagine what would have happened if I had left, would it had caught on fire?  God only knows.

So long story short…I did not get the video done of the cute card. I will do it tomorrow.  We did get out of the stinky house when Sharon came over and Jeff let me video him to show you how he made the stakes for the Spring Fling make n take.

Thanks for listening to my babbling.

Have an awesome Friday and thanks for stopping in.

So glad everything worked out without a major catastrophy. I have often wondered how I would ever be able to itemize all the wonderful stamping stuff if we had to make an insurance claim.

So glad that everything is okay!!! … I was at Home Depot last night picking up some switch plates (outlet covers) and called my husband (he used to work at Home Depot) to ask him where the aluminum flashing was. He thought I was crazy for wanting it. Little does he know…

So glad that everyone is safe, and so glad that Toby was not home alone. You must always trust your gut feeling, because it's usually right.

Oh goodness, I'm glad everything is OK. How scary. It sounds like you did all the right stuff. We have the same problems with living in the country. We have to pay to get our fire fighters out here. Also we have a wacky address, even though it is right on the books. When we had to call an ambulance last year the Mapquest told them to go a certain way. It should have only taken 5 minutes to get here but took 25 since they used Mapquest. Luckily my DH wasn't having a heart attack like he thought he was. I am so glad everything turned out OK

That is a scary story, I know how helpless you can feel at a time like that. I'm so glad it turned out ok and that you finally found the root of the problem. What would we do without our husbands?

So sorry to hear about this! We had a similar thing happen to us in January where the timing was off and the heater would be on, but not the fan. When the fan did finally turn on, smelly smoke would fill our upstairs & set off the alarms. It was really scary.
We thought a rat had chewed through some wiring and maybe started a fire in the attic(!) or, well we had lots of crazy ideas of what could be causing the smoke. I finally called the Heater Guy and he fixed it.
Hope you find out what's causing your smoke.
    Take care, sweetie!

Wow… I'm so glad you're ok… I live alone so I don't have a 'man' in the house and I'm always freaking out with any unusual smell so I can image how you felt. I hope it won't be expensive, its nice to own a home, but hate the expense!

I'm glad everything turned out ok, even though it may be costly to fix it, it is a slight thing compared to a fire or something happening while you were asleep or gone. Sending hugs.

The important thing is you are okay and the damage was not too bad. It's a good thing you found the problem.

Oh…so glad you found the source and am having it resolved. I always worry about our little pets like Toby. Somehow if it bothers us, it has to be much worse for small pets. After a brutal snow storm, we had quite a bit of freezing on our roof. Water managed to get in and down to our family room. Mold had set in. Although we had it professionally taken care of, every time I take my small pet down there, she is sick. I didn't realize this until after a few times. I'm thinking there must be some mold spores still there that is affecting her because she is only 3.2 lbs. Always be careful and concerned. I'm glad you persued it even after the inspection of the fire officials! Better safe than sorry!!!!

Diana OMGosh what an ordeal. I couldn't be as calm as you and writing about it! I would have been a basket case and probably wouldn't have gone back in the house until it was fixed and not smelling..but that's me! Thank goodness you were there. God was with you girl!

As I read your smoke story I just wanted to yell, GET OUT OF THE HOUSE!!!! We had a house fire 3 yrs ago this month that caused great damage. We didn't live in our house for 7 months while it was being restored. Beeping noises, funny smells still freak me out to this day. Sometimes I still think I smell smoke. Of course my hubby probably would like to clobber me in the head sometimes. LOL I was at a scrapbooking reteat last year and someone had set the fire alarm off and I about came unglued. Luckily my best friend was there with me an kept me calm. Don't know if I'll ever get over those sounds and smells. Glad you guys were ok. BTW, love your blog and all your neat projects.
